UNESCO Expert Meeting on Cultural diversity in knowledge societies

Vai decorrer em St Petersburg, 17-19 May 2005 sob o auspicio da UNESCO o enconro de peritos para discutir a diversidade cultural na Sociedade da Informação. O encontro tem o propósito de debater "the opportunities offered by NTICs for future knowledge societies (new intercultural connections and networking, new opportunities to make old and new knowledge available, new opportunities to creativity as well as to access cultural and knowledge contents and services produced worldwide) as well as the current challenges (digital divide, development issues, cultural and linguistic diversity, obstacles to access to ICTs and to the production of local content, policy framework)".

Na agenda contam tópicos como:

The role of local content development in building knowledge societies (how vulnerable societies and contemporary creators can maintain their cultural identities while successfully contributing to knowledge societies).

The linguistic diversity challenge : Old and new professions (Discussion on selected problem areas: linguistic policies, interoperability and monitoring, linguistic diversity of domain names, multilingual Internet tools and search engines, translation and indexation software: what role for translators and information scientists in cyberspace?)

Digital heritage, knowledge societies and cultural diversity (the role of heritage institutions in building the webscape,"dot.museum", digital rights management for digital images, e-commerce for museum by-products and digital safeguarding of intangible heritage)

Digital libraries: their promises and related challenges: On-going experiences, the Google proposal to digitise full collections of major libraries and publisher’s catalogues, copyright protection and other issues on public domain digitalisation

Creative communities in the web : the UNESCO Digi-Arts portal ( arts and music connected to media and technology): pilot research on arts related to technology, online training through master classes and tutorials, regional network directories, young digital creators, contests and awards.

Go mobile: new opportunities for developing countries?  (Mobile phone technology offers new opportunities for web access and many other additional services such as music and image downloading. It is also about to become the most generalized and low-cost new technology. Discussion on its future potential for all)
